History
In 1979, Saddam Hussein was elected president of Iraq. He ruled with an iron fist by arresting and murdering his political enemies and putting fear into the hearts of his enemies. Saddam wanted to re establish Iraq's war ravaged economy and to do that, he needed money. It just so happened, that Kuwait, Iraq's neighbor, was quite wealthy. So in 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait and they won. But the United Nations were not happy, and made Iraq dispose of their chemical weapons program. Tensions between the United Nations, including the United States, was high for the next decade. In 2002, after the 9/11 attacks, President Bush suspected Iraq to be creating weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism, along with North Korea and Iran. After that, regular inspections happened in Iraq, with little luck of finding proof of these weapons. Under the pretense that Iraq was harboring these weapons, in 2003, the United States invaded Iraq. Iraq's government and military was defeated within weeks. After the Iraqi military was beaten, Saddam Hussein went into hiding and was found about 8 months later, hiding in a small underground bunker. He was handed over to the Interim Iraqi government and in 2006 was found guilty and sentenced to death.
